Watertown Officials Fumble With Fire

Watertown Officials Fumble With Fire

Recently, I read Watertown Township Deputy Supervisor Tubbs-Sims began discussions with the City of Lansing concerning regional fire protection. This is laughable considering her interference with the Authority Management and her attempts over the past 2 years to destroy Watertown's cooperative agreements with Eagle Township.

My question -- why isn't Supervisor Deb Adams leading in these discussions? This is the job we are paying her to do. Are people aware she has made the Township Administrator Jennifer Tubs-Sims her Deputy Supervisor? This means in the Supervisor’s frequent absence, Ms. Tubbs-Sims (a non-resident) is running the show! Doesn’t our Supervisor have time to attend to Township business?

Immediately following her November 2003 election, Supervisor Adams removed the Township Fire Authority appointee (Trustee Ken Mitchell) and replaced him with people having no fire service knowledge (she and Al Skerritt). Mitchell had been on the LGRFA Board as Treasurer since its inception and faithfully represented Watertown for several years prior on the Grand Ledge Fire Board. This political move had nothing to do with taking responsible action to represent Watertown Township residents.

Six months into the new Board’s term, fire department employees are unionizing; the Chief has resigned; critical firefighter training has been postponed; the Authority Treasurer has resigned; the worthwhile agreement with LCC to provide trained firefighters is being terminated and Watertown Administration is scrambling for new agreements with other Departments. These are symptoms of impending doom, not progress! Is this the future Deb Adams, Al Skerritt, Jean Husby and Johnnie Maas promised taxpayers who supported them in the last election?

Yes, Watertown representatives (Deputy Tubbs-Sims, Supervisor Adams, Trustee Skerritt and Clerk Husby) are focusing upon seeking out costly alternatives with other municipalities -- Lansing. Considering Lansing's recent budget problems I wonder what kind of partner they could make?
In 2000, before we formed LGRFA, I worked with Lansing's Chief Martin attempting to work out a cooperative fire service arrangement utilizing City of Lansing administration and firefighter staff in Watertown Township. Lansing required Watertown hire enough firefighters capable of maintaining response capabilities compatible with Lansing -- full-time! This required 3 full-time firefighters on staff 24/7 -- 9 full time firefighters required to do this. LGRFA has 4 fulltime staff. How does doubling the staff equate to lower cost? Our elected officials need to focus on maximizing Watertown taxpayer’s emergency services investment, not squandering it by giving to outsiders to manage.

I’ll bet Watertown's close neighbor and forever friendly partner Eagle Township must be wondering if Watertown will make good on its past promises to them and Watertown residents. I think with Al, Deb, Jean and Deputy Tubb’s Sims (not to mention silent but supportive Johnnie Maas) at the helm the fledgling fire service will continue to erode. No plans for success-- no future. Comment To the informed observer: You are the one that is unethical and you know it. The taxpayers want the Fire Dept. why is it so important for you to try and undermine Chris's efforts at every turn? Some of his former collegues have cookie crumbs on their chins and you are one of them!

Comment It is time the board take a close look at the way Sims and Husby conduct themselves. We smell two rats everytime we walk into those Township offices. It is time that the board either conducts an exorcisim or fumagates...or how about hiring someone who actually appreciates the Township taxpayers? My spouse told me that Husby, Tubbs-Sims and Al Skerrit are are ignorant and it took a while but they all are so tranparent and obviously , if it walks like a rat, talks like a rat and smells like a rat it is a rat!

Comment On June 5, 2005, "Concerned about Watertown" stated that the Board was not representing the residents with regards to fire and ambulance issues. Would "Concerned" provide more information about why they feel the Board is not representing the residents?

Comment None of these fools has the best interest of the Township in mind they have turned this into their Fifedome and Watertown residents should be attending all the meetings and watch Al, Jean and Jennifer makeing faces and Al needs anger management or something because he is so mean spirited.

Comment Deb Adams is a decent person but should look for another Township Administrator. We ,as Citizens should recall most of the board members. Perhaps we should push for the residency requirements for all employees of the Township Hall as most every Municipality does have residency requirements that would force all employees to face the residents after hours , which would hopefully result in the employment of more honest, decent and deserving individuals.

Comment The people of Watertown are not being properly represented by the Board Members and should be given the opportunity to vote by ballot for ambulance and fire services.

Comment Makes you wonder if these people are getting some kickbacks . The Flying J is a very treacherous stretch of road where semis pull out in front of me either on my way to work or on the way back and have had to slam on my brakes more times than I care to count. Sure is a good thing that LGRFA is right next door. I would hate to think of how long it would take Mercy to get there. MMMMM....What's the real story behind the board supporting Mercy and the Flying J and not the Fire department. The fire dept. is far more important to Watertown that Flying J. GREAT EFFORT CHRIS! YOU CARE MORE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY THAN JENNIFER AND THE BOARD DOES. MAYBE A FEW BOARD MEMBERS WILL WAKE UP.

Comment Jean and Jennifer are obviously writing to try to sling a little more mud. What do you have to hide and why don't you respond by signing your own name and not an alias if you have nothing to hide? Ed Mckeon hired Jean to do landscape work. Jennifer is unprofessional with staff, Jean is abusing Township office of the Clerk by running her business out of our offices and Al Skerritt tries to pick up a little real estate business through the Board. Who else has their hands in the cookie jar? This township could do a lot better. Everyone is aware of the misdeeds of Jennifer and Jean but are afraid of them and all their evil cronies. You board members need to look into these matters and soon, please!

Comment Dear Informed Observer: When someone is running for office -- its fair game for them to be publicly critical. Once someone gains political office, they are subject to the same treatment. Now, I'm just a fellow taxpayer -- voicing my opinion same as you. I took the high road during the election. Maybe this is part of my next campaign, would that make my comments acceptable? Why don't you help by sharing some of YOUR good news then.

Comment Chris- It is common knowledge that you are responible for the complete mismanagement and derailing of the fire board and that you acted, time and time agian, in a completely unethical manner. It is you, Mr. Pratt, who almost drove the township into bankrupcy with your hairbrained schemes and misguided handling of the whole fire board issue. As a secondary issue, why do you feel it necessary to personally attack your former colleges? You were a member of the board of trustees, but lost the election. Since an election is based on the public's vote, and you lost, I can only assume that the majority of the Citizens of Watertown Township did not, and do not, agree with you. You really need to get a life. Face it... you lost. Move on.

Comment Yes, Deputy Supervisor Tubbs-Sims proudly announced to staff she had recruited Deb Adams to run for Supervisor. She uses her position to pursue her political agenda -- take control of the Township and the fire department. Why? So she could hold the Township hostage for a fatter pay check! Employee turnover in the Township Hall speaks directly to the quality of Tubbs-Sims management abilities. Ed McKeon is partly to blame for this problem having allowed Jennifer the run of the place while he was living in Arizona. Almost all the employees whom have left the Township took checks with them settling one grievance or another. Just last December when the new Administration eliminated our Parks & Recreation Department -- they paid a senior employee off with cash instead of following seniority guidelines per union contract and laying off the last person hired! How could this happen if there isn't any money? This happens over and over again. Interesting enough, Tubbs-Sims suggested the Township squander $5,000 to resolve the communication problems in the office she and Jean Husby have created. Funny thing, Tubbs-Sims spread a rumor that I planned to fire her if elected -- imagine that!

Comment Citizen x is a township employee that lied to everyone and campaigned for Deb Adams within township offices on a daily basis as did Gean Husby ,AL Skerritt and Ed Mckeon. Citizen x, who is not a resident,,Jennifer and Gene Husby have the most to hide and they know it. People will come out of the wood work to show this township how corrupt they are and there is plenty of proof. Which township employee are you going to set up next. Gene and Jennifer should conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times but lack the ability to do so because they spend so much time sabatoging or setting people up when the office staff begins to see the patterns of employees are bullied beyond belief so as to make them quit. Gene and Jennifer have mentioned that they want to get rid of the union but maybe the employees need protection from people who play childish games. Al Skerritt does take a few hundred dollares a month for titles that he holds in the township but has the employees do all the work. He and Ed McKeon will point fingers at everyone but their hand are deep into the pot as are Husby's, Sims', Weitzle's and Maas'. Skerritt is frequently gone as was Mckeon but they have no problem accepting checks from the township that they haven't even worked for!

Comment DEAR CITIZEN X, THE PEOPLE OF THIS TOWNSHIP ARE HAPPY TO PAY FOR FIREMEN TO PROTECT THEIR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. THE TOWNSHIP TAXPAYERS ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT THEIR TAXES DOLLARS BEING USED AS WAGES TO PEOPLE WHO LACK THE INTEGRITY TO DO THE JOBS THEY WERE ACTUALLY HIRED OR ELECTED TO PERFORM. SHAME ON ED MCKEON, AL SKERRITT, JEAN HUSBY, JENIFFER FOR "PLAYING OFFICE AND COLLECTING THEIR PAYCHECKS" WITHOUT ACTUALLY WORKING FULL TIME FOR FULL TIME PAY. A LOT OF TAX DOLLARS COULD BE SAVED BY REDUCING STAFF HOURS TO HALF-TIME-THE WORK THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY PRODUCING. TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT HOW JEAN'S POLITICAL SLANTS COME THROUGH IN WRITTEN MINUTES FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND IT BECOMES CLEAR THAT SHE ONLY CARES ABOUT WHAT SERVES HER POLITICALLY. AL SKERRITT ACTS LIKE A POMPOUS ASS AT MEETINGS AND LET IT BE KNOWN THAT HE WAS RECALLED JUST A DECADE AGO. DOES THIS COMMUNITY NOT HAVE A MEMORY? JENNIFER HAS STATED PUBLICALLY THAT "THE PEOPLE OF CLINTON COUNTY ARE WEIRD" AND WOULD NEVER MOVE HERE YET SHE COLLECTS HER PAYCHECK, OUR TAX DOLLARS, HERE IN WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP. SHE HAS ALWAYS STATED THAT "I HAVE AL, ED MCKEON AND THE REST OF THE BOARD WRAPPED AROUND MY FINGER, THEY LOVE ME!" APPARENTLY NO ONE CARES TO WATCH AND HOLD ACCOUNTABLE JEAN HUSBY, AL SKERRIT, JENNIFER SIMS, ED MCKEON AND THE REST OF THE SORRY LOT. PERHAPS THEY SHOULD GIVE AN HOUR TO HOUR ACCOUNTING THAT IS MONITORED CLOSLEY BY THIS COMMUNITY. MAYBE THEN THEY WOULD ALL BE ACCESSIBLE WHEN THEY REALLY ARE NEEDED, DO YOU GUYS REALLY THINK THAT TAXPAYER'S WOULD ALLOW YOU TO BUILD A NEW TOWNSHIP HALL SO THAT YOU CAN ABUSE THE TAXPAYERS WHILE ENJOYING NEW OFFICES? FORGET IT!

Comment I got a call with updated budget information. Apparently, the fire authority budget was slashed by almost $100,000!!!! This was made up in part by cutting out the Chiefs pay and firefighter training.

Mon May 23, 2005 12:28 pm MST by Chris Pratt

Comment Let me jump in here. Who could expect the Chief to work for 2 years attending countless meetings, recruit a staff of firefighters, open and manage our important emergency services, then have to deal with Watertown idiots? Good for him whatever the reason he left -- ineptness IS a good description for current Administration.

Thu May 19, 2005 4:21 pm MST by Anonymous

Comment Eneptness is a good word! The primary was in August, Chief got out in October. It was clear to everyone what "Administration" had in store! Is "Administration" Jennifer?

Thu May 19, 2005 4:03 pm MST by Chris Pratt

Comment Yes, but the chief resigned well before the current administration took office. Therefore, it was NOT the supposed ineptness of the current administration that led to his decision to leave.

Thu May 19, 2005 10:30 am MST by Anonymous

Comment Perhaps you would like to elaborate as to what lies you are referring to? What do you say to the 3 million dollars budget surplus??? Hard to drag that kind of money through bankruptcy court -- isn't it? I noted the chief resigned -- you think is was for some reason other that wanting to spend time with his family? Signed -- not afraid to post my name! Chris Pratt

Thu May 19, 2005 7:02 am MST by Chris

Comment Gee, Mister Pratt, considering your fire department budget that you and your cronies lied to get into place almost ran the township into bankruptcy, it seems like you'd take your no-township-job-having sorry butt to some other township and try to ruin THEIR finances instead. And YOU know something about fire departments? What a freakin joke. It was my understanding that your chief resigned not out of disappointment with the fire board but because he needed to spend more time with his new wife (and maybe because he lost his pathetic excuse for a supporter on the township board). You threatened people, lied to get elected (which didn't even work, because people aren't that stupid in Watertown)- heck, the only person in the entire township office that doesn't think you're a loser is the treasurer- and she's the type who would deputize her own daughter instead of looking for a suitable replacement. I'd post my name, but I'm afraid you'd come after me and my family and try to get back at us for saying anything negative about you - that's just the kind of guy you are. Have a nice life programming computer systems for car dealerships- that skill certainly would come in handy for clandestine access to sensitve materials on an after-hours basis, wouldn't it?
